Food safety

DBP Plastics tests plastic packaging extensively on the use of substances and the migration of substances from packaging to food. Only plastic packaging which meets all legal requirements may be considered safe. We only sell packaging which meet all the criteria.

Foodstuffs are packaged in order to preserve them better, and improve protection against spoilage. Substances can pass from packaging to food in a process called migration. That is why substances must not be used in the production of plastic materials which come into contact with food unless it can be shown that the substances are safe. The rules concerning this are laid down in the European Framework Regulation EU 1935/2004 and the supplementary European Union legislation 10/2011.

Monomers are the building blocks from which the plastics used for packaging are made. Permitted monomers are on the positive list of the Commission Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 on plastic materials. Before monomers are added to this list, they must undergo extensive toxicity tests which are carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), an independent institute.

Additives may be added to change the properties of the plastic so that it can meet the requirements. Permitted additives are on the same positive list, and subject to the same approval process as monomers.

The end products are also tested to determine if they are suitable. Migration testing at independent laboratories and/or migration calculations as specified in Article 1 (32) of EU 10/2011 are used to verify that migration is limited. This amount of migratable substances is subject to very strict legal requirements, which in turn are based on toxicological safe limits.

The packaging migration standards for products for infants and toddlers are stricter than those for products intended for adults. Detailed analyses of our products, the surface/volume ratio and specific and overall migration tests prove that our products are suitable for infants and toddlers.

Bisphenol A and phthalate plasticizers

Thanks to declarations from our raw material suppliers, we can state that our products do not contain bisphenol A or PVC. These are not added or formed during our production process.

In addition, no phthalate plasticisers are deliberately added in the formulation of our products. Phthalates are usually used to make plastics soft and flexible, but products supplied by DBP Plastics do not require plasticisers. Furthermore, DBP does not deliberately use heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, antimony, or nickel to manufacture its products.
